Walberton Place Care Home fulfils 94-year-old resident Bobbie's wish with a trip to the beach

Walberton Place Care Home near Arundel, West Sussex, recently fulfilled a heartfelt wish for resident, Bobbie aged 94, by arranging a special trip to West Wittering Beach. This outing was part of the care home’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the lives of its residents through their Make a Wish initiative.

The Make a Wish initiative has supported residents from Walberton Place and across the Country Court group to enjoy a variety of special outings and activities, ranging from boat trips and book launches to off-road driving adventures and family tea parties. As part of Walberton Place’s person-centred care approach, staff take the time to listen and learn about each resident's unique hobbies and pastimes, tailoring activities to meet their individual preferences.

During a one-to-one conversation with Deputy Manager Katie, Bobbie expressed her wish to visit the beach—a place where she could enjoy the fresh sea air, feel the sand beneath her feet, and take in the beautiful scenery. Deputy Manager Katie share.

“We understand that accessing the beach can be quite challenging for Bobbie, who relies on a wheelchair. It was really important to us to make sure that Bobbie could enjoy this experience without any added difficulties. That's why we put a lot of thought and care into planning. We took the time to visit West Wittering Beach beforehand, making sure every detail was in place to create a smooth and comfortable experience for Bobbie.”

"Seeing Bobbie’s joy at the beach was incredibly rewarding"

On the day of the trip Bobby was accompanied by our Wellbeing Team. Once they arrived at the beautiful West Wittering Beach she experienced the simple joys of the seaside—breathing in the fresh sea air, feeling the warm sand beneath her feet. Katie, Deputy Manager at Walberton Place, reflected on the day.

“Seeing Bobbie’s joy at the beach was incredibly rewarding. What might seem like a small wish to some can mean the world to our residents, especially those who face mobility challenges.”
