Carpenders Park Care Home near Watford recently partnered with South Oxhey Leisure Centre to fulfil a special wish for two residents, supporting them to return to swimming through the care home's Make a Wish initiative.
The Make a Wish initiative has seen residents from Carpenders Park and across the Country Court group enjoy special outings and activities, from boat trips and book launches to off-road driving and lots of family tea parties. As part of the person-centred care approach at Carpenders Park, staff are keen to listen and learn about residents' unique hobbies and pastimes, supporting them to tailor activities to their individual preferences.
Senior Customer Relations Manager, Laura Mills, highlighted the significance of this wish.
“One of our residents hasn’t walked for a long time, and we hope swimming will help strengthen her legs, enabling her to take a few steps. This would be a huge achievement for her. We look forward to organising regular swimming sessions to support her progress.”
During the outing, both residents floated in the pool with the aid of care staff and family members. Over time, they grew more confident, experiencing a sense of independence in the water. Interim Home Manager, Julie Wicks, shared.
“It’s moments like this that make my job so rewarding. One of our residents, Ruth, fondly recalled past holidays abroad while in the water. Despite her dementia, she repeatedly expressed her joy, saying, ‘This is fabulous.’” Supporting Home Manager, Natalie White, also thanked the leisure centre staff for their support and added, “We are all excited for our next trip on Thursday 3rd October.”
