Oakview Lodge Care & Nursing Home join forces with Tesco staff volunteers to create a rainbow themed sensory garden

Oakview Lodge Care & Nursing Home in Welwyn Garden City created a sensory garden for their residents, inspired by Country Court's annual gardening competition, Country Court In Bloom. Staff, residents and family members joined forces with volunteers from Tesco Head Quarters to create a sensory wonderland for everyone in the home to enjoy.

The sensory garden is the second project that staff from Tesco HQ have been involved with as part of an initiative for staff to give something back to their local community in Hertfordshire. The volunteers have previously created a squirrel assault course to encourage wildlife into the garden at Oakview Lodge.

We wanted to create our sensory garden after a recent residents' meeting where they asked for more colour in the garden and a water feature. We also thought it would tie in nicely with Country Court in Bloom’s theme, ‘Plant a Rainbow,’ and decided to create our rainbow-inspired sensory corner,” commented Wellbeing Coordinator Rachel Davies.

For our sensory garden, we focused on three senses: smell, touch, and sight. We added beautiful-smelling herbs for the sense of smell, an array of colourful flowers for visual stimulation, and transformed existing benches and sheds with vibrant colours. Additionally, we included a water feature to enhance the sensory experience,” explained Home Manager Clare Twiss.

Residents loved painting with their loved ones and planting flowers. Everyone put so much effort and helped make our garden a stimulating and relaxing space for our residents to enjoy at their leisure. I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who supported us today,” added Wellbeing Coordinator Miheala.

Relatives commented, “It’s been lovely to see everyone out in the garden,” and “It looks fantastic, you can see how much hard work has gone into the garden. Well done to all involved.”
