Staff at Walberton Place Care Home near Arundel recently supported resident Phil, aged 91, to make his return to swimming through their Make a Wish Initiative.
The Make a Wish initiative has seen residents from Walberton Place and across the Country Court group enjoy special outings and activities, from boat trips and book launches to off-road driving and lots of family tea parties. As part of the person-centred care approach at Walberton Place, staff are keen to listen and learn about residents' unique hobbies and pastimes, supporting them to tailor activities to their individual preferences.
Home Manager Edmalyn Consigna explained.
“During a discussion with our Wellbeing Lead, Stella Austin, Phil reminisced about his younger days in Nottingham, where he enjoyed woodworking and swimming regularly. Swimming not only brought him joy but also helped manage his asthma. When asked if he would like to swim again, Phil eagerly said yes.
Our team quickly organised the trip, partnering with MXT Rydon Swimming School in Storrington. With support from the local council and a taxi company, Phil's first swim was a huge success. He delighted in floating on his back and performing his favourite strokes, expressing a desire to return.
Soon after, Phil enjoyed another swim, this time meeting MXT Swimming owner Mario Trichkov."
Wellbeing Lead, Stella Austin commented.
"We were so pleased to be able to support Phil with this wish with the help of MXT Rydon Swimming School and enjoyed reminiscing on his former years. It's wonderful to see how these experiences can bring so much joy and fulfilment to our residents and staff."
