Baycroft Flitwick Care Home in Ampthill recently hosted a heartwarming celebration for resident Hilda’s 107th birthday, shared with fellow resident Maude, who was also celebrating her birthday. The milestone event was filled with laughter, live entertainment, and delicious refreshments.
“We had a wonderful guest singer, Bob Jack, who provided lively entertainment. We also enjoyed a delicious chocolate cake, specially made by our Chef at Hilda’s request,” commented Wellbeing Coordinator Giorgia Dunning.
Hilda was thrilled to receive a birthday card from the King and Queen, presented by Philip Fothergill, Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire. Bav Shah, High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, also joined the celebration with his mother to deliver another card.
Lead Wellbeing Coordinator Bernie Hoo-Hing added, “Alongside these cards, we launched a Facebook campaign to gather 107 birthday cards for Hilda. The response surpassed expectations, with an incredible 583 cards arriving from as far as New Jersey. Among them was a touching card from a woman who had attended school with Hilda’s daughter, sparking fond memories for Hilda. Cards poured in from schools, nurseries, colleges, the Brownies, Women’s Institute, local businesses, and community groups. Overwhelmed by the response, Hilda exclaimed, ‘Oh gosh,’ as we promised to read every card to her in time.”
When asked about her secret to a long life, Hilda commented “God’s will and not eating vegetables.”
‘Hilda’s life story is as extraordinary as her milestone. Born in Wimbledon, London, she left school at 14 to work as a Junior Nursery Maid at Fetteresso Castle in Scotland, caring for two children. Although homesick, she fondly recalls the kindness of a porter at Crewe station who helped her during a difficult journey.’ Commented Wellbeing Coordinator Giorgia Dunning.
‘At 18, Hilda met her husband, George, and they married in 1939, with Hilda wearing a stylish brown dress and hat. During World War II, George served in India with the Royal Engineers, and the couple maintained their bond through heartfelt letters. After the war, George returned to Vauxhall, eventually becoming Manager of Final Finish. Hilda fondly remembers George’s passion for gardening, joking that she wasn’t allowed near his pride and joy.’ Commented Lead Wellbeing Coordinator Bernie Hoo-Hing.
Hilda and George raised two children, Eric and Hilary. Eric had no children, while Hilary’s sons, Nigel and Edward, visit regularly and attended the birthday celebration. Remarkably, Hilda also shares her long life with her brother, who is 102 and resides in Leicester.
“I’m grateful for my good health and a life filled with love and cherished memories,” expressed Hilda.
“As a team at Baycroft Flitwick, we have been honoured to celebrate Hilda’s incredible milestone and wish her continued happiness and health,” commented Home Manager Corina Ashby.
