Residents and members of staff at Fenchurch House in Spalding Lincolnshire, recently celebrated and raised awareness for World Alzheimer’s Awareness Day with a Rock and Roll themed afternoon. Songs from Elvis to the Beetles with a few requests in between were played on the record player and members of the wellbeing and activities team dressed in outfits from the era, which all helped to boost the mood within the home and aided with reminiscing, taking residents back to being on the dance floor in their younger years.
World Alzheimer’s Day is part of the awareness month and is a fantastic opportunity to help educate and encourage support for families who have a loved one living with Alzheimer’s or Dementia, globally there are nearly 50 million people living with dementia worldwide and members of the Fenchurch House staff team understand how important the awareness is and of course making the day fun for the residents was very important to the wellbeing and activities team, decorating the Gatsby bistro cafe and providing refreshments for the afternoon.
Donna, one of the wellbeing coordinators who had worked hard to organise the afternoon, read out a touching poem which outlines what it is like to live with dementia or Alzheimer’s which a lot of the family and friends could relate to.
Rose, who is also a wellbeing coordinator commented about Donna ‘You are a wonderful person and you almost had me in tears.’
Jolene the Home Manager at Fenchurch, spent some time dancing and chatting with the residents and said, ‘It’s so fantastic to see our residents joining in and having so much fun and having a great team of staff, who can organise such a wonderful event for family and friends to get involved in too is extremely rewarding.’
Also attending were Carol and Harry who have become an extension of the Fenchurch family over the past year or so. Harry stays at the home regularly for respite care and as they are both keen dancers they were invited along for the afternoon as guests of honour and were also presented with flowers as a thank you for their friendship and ongoing support.
