Staff at Abbey Grange Care & Nursing Home in Sheffield recently made a lifelong dream come true for resident Liz, a devoted ABBA fan who has always wished to see the iconic band perform live. In honour of her passion, the team organised a special afternoon with her family, featuring a live performance by an ABBA tribute band. The celebration was complete with a delicious Greek-style buffet for everyone to enjoy made by Chef Manager Louise Wilson and the kitchen staff team.
The Make a Wish initiative at Abbey Grange, part of the Country Court group, is dedicated to creating memorable experiences for residents. From boat trips and book launches to off-road driving and family tea parties, this program is a vital aspect of Abbey Grange’s person-centred care approach. Staff take the time to understand each resident's unique hobbies and interests, tailoring activities to match their individual preferences.
Wellbeing Coordinator Sharon Ogorman praised the ABBA tribute band's performance: "They were fantastic, playing all the residents’ favourite hits like ‘Money, Money, Money,’ ‘Dancing Queen,’ and ‘Mamma Mia.’ It was such a joy to see everyone’s faces light up."
Home Manager Kerry Peach added, "Events like these are the reason I love my job. Bringing residents' wishes to life and creating lasting memories with their loved ones is truly special."
Michael Nicolls, Wellbeing Coordinator, noted, "Everyone had a great time dancing, especially Liz’s family, many of whom dressed up in ABBA-themed costumes. The performers even got some family members to join in as Björn and Benny in the performance, which brought smiles all around. The afternoon was truly special for our resident Liz."
Liz's daughter shared, "Before my mum had children, she and her sister Kath loved socialising and dancing to music, and ABBA was always her favourite. Even now, as she lives with late-stage dementia and cancer, playing ABBA’s music makes her light up."
"Our mum has the kindest soul, always putting others before herself," Commented Liz’s four children.
Liz’s daughter concluded with heartfelt gratitude: "A big thank you from all of us for making this day so special for our mum."
